  • May. 18th, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Just three dishes? Hmm...

Today, I did a mascot gig at Shea Stadium for American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Of course, since the weather was good, I did some geocaches in the morning on my way to the gig. WHY?! (Did I hide a micro) and Don't Get Stumped! are both in Secaucus by the Mill Creek Marsh Trail. Very easy.

Then I crossed over to the Fordham section of the Bronx for Five of Diamonds. Now, that was a different experience. The cache was by the sidewalk at an auto repair shop. I got there and a helpful guy from the shop started directing me towards the cache. Wonder what tipped him off that I was looking for the cache. That was great because coordinates were soft. I found the cache and then had a brief conversation with the fellow.

After that, I navigated the congested streets of Fordham to Damian's place. Picked him up and went to Shea Stadium to meet up with the rest of our group: [info]jbadger, [info]foxwell, [info]flykat, [info]rapidtrabbit, [info]jdpuppy, and [info]jimwolf24. I especially wanted to do this gig because last year's gig at the same event was good and this is the last time we'll get to do this at Shea Stadium before it is torn down. (Citi Field, which is currently under construction next door, will be its replacement.) I wasn't disappointed. It was good. Lots of people. Good crowd and good interaction. We took turns going out in costume. I did the first shift in costume, escorted in the second shift, and did a short third shift in costume again.

After the gig, we made a quick stop just around the corner from the stadium for a geocache for [info]jbadger. (It's one that I'd already found a week ago.) Then we went to Flushing Chinatown and had dinner at Sentosa. I had nasi lemak and ordered a lobak (shrimp and pork fritters) appetizer to share with the group.

Some pictures from the gig... )

The Creolization of Roman Gaul: Examples from Divodurum Mediomatricorum.

Abstract: The political and cultural inclusion of provinces within the Roman Empire has
traditionally been described as Romanization, a form of acculturation. However, while
Romanization may have applicability in investigating the processes in which elites adopt
Roman norms, the concept is flawed when applied to the non-elite population. To address
and overcome these flaws, the concept of creolization—the merging of two cultures to
create a third culture—is used to explore the process through which the Gallic population
of Divodurum Mediomatricorum participated in the creation of a new Gallo-Roman
identity.

This coming Tuesday I start up my ASL class. I'm really looking forward to that.

Two weeks from now, Jason leaves town for the summer. That's going to be very strange.

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 6:18 PM
I’m not really a “horse guy”, and I never watch horse racing. But today while visiting the family we watched the Preakness, and damn Big Brown is a gorgeous horse. It looked like he won without even really trying, and had a fun time in the process! Impressive!

I liked it. Saw it in DLP.

There is nothing after the credits.

Go see it. It's as worth seeing as much as the first one is not.

Gay wars...

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 1:23 PM
While gay people in probably the gayest place on Earth, San Francisco California, celebrate being able to marry their gay partners (along with Ellen DeGeneres getting teared up as her always screaming fanbase...screamed their asses off as usual after announcing she's getting married), guess who absolutely has to slap the bible down and piss all over everyone's happiness?

From the Cincinnati-based "Citizens for Community Values":

"Old and New Testaments clearly state God's intention for human sexuality: the monogamous, lifelong sexual union of one man and one woman. Any departure from that Divine order is a distortion of God's intention for human sexuality, including not only homosexual behavior, but also rape, incest and bestiality."

With a name like Citizens for Community Values, totally not religious at all! Right?... :|

What pisses me off the most about all of this is the fact that we all have our basic freedoms. I believe in what I want 'cause hey, I can. Religious types believe in their god because they can. Works for me 'cause hey, whatever makes you happy, right?

So how can a group of people with their own beliefs, tell another group of people that they don't agree to the point where they can -refuse- rights to others? That's a pretty big "unconstitutional" to me right there. Yet they're fighting it, even though it denies the basic freedoms of American citizens. At that point, we might as well just throw away the bill of rights and just put a bible in it's place. I might not agree with religion, but I'm not picketing the state house to get every church closed, I just don't practice it. Why can't it be the same on the religious side?

It's simple, all American citizens are allowed their rights. Some don't agree with them, like the second amendment. However, if you don't like it, don't buy a gun! Gay marriage, if you don't want gay marriage, don't get married to a dude. How hard is that?

Also comparing gay people to rape and bestiality. Class points right there. See also: "Control by fear". What's next, gay people kill children?

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 10:02 PM
Photobucket
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc305/winfox/lj/IMGA5893.jpg

Update on Mom

  • May. 17th, 2008 at 2:23 PM
She's out of the hospital (again), but having a lot of chest congestion.  Could be a bad cold, could be an effect of the operation, they don't know. Anyway, she's coughing a lot and having trouble sleeping.  She's eating again, though, which is a good thing.  Poor Dad sounds kind of tired of dealing with it all.

This afternoon the Girth & Mirth Indy Pride committee meets here to make plans.  I can't believe Pride is only a month away already.  :p
